I was delighted to be asked to write the catalogue essay for artist Stuart Semple’s first show with the Fabien Castanier Gallery in LA’s Culver City, which opened this week.
I visited Semple back in August in his Dorest studio and spent a lovely couple of days talking about Placebo, palm trees, Andy Warhol, mental health and Lady Gaga. Researching and writing the essay proved rather more harrowing than expected. Hopefully the piece of writing I’ve produced sits alongside and stands up to Semple’s works which – in a world where it sometimes seems like ‘cool’ is everything – are not afraid to actually say something.

A big thank you to Stuart, Emily and Ari for welcoming me so warmly and to Stuart and the Fabien Castanier Gallery for the opportunity. Thanks too to Paula Dorfler, as well as Lauren Whisnant at Castanier, and Claire Lem for such an elegant catalogue design. These cheeky portraits of the artist are by Sarah Morris and are used without permission but I’m sure she won’t mind.
Stuart Semple: My Sonic Youth is at Fabien Castanier Gallery, 2919 La Cienega Blvd, Culver City, CA 90232 until 28 November 2015.
